"We've always had a development machine and a production box. Can I combine them in one new box using LPAR?"
It's straight forward with Performance Navigator.
Just click the exclusive 'What-If' menu and then the Server Consolidation Tab.
Highlight the development system and click Add.
The graphs now show the combined workload of both systems will work on a 720:2061-1501.
Now the question is can we LPAR the two systems.
Just click on the LPAR Tab.
The first step is to determine how many processors will be shared vs dedictated.
We only have one process so with the All partition button selected, change the Shared Proc to one.
Now select the Pri partion, select shared processor and take all the defaults.
This will assign the minimum process to the primary partition.
Notice the that 10% is the minimum.
Now select the 2nd partition, select shared processor and take all the defaults.
Now highlight the first system and allocate 100% of batch and interactive workload to that partition.
Now increase the Shared Processor Unit to .5 and the interactive % to 55.
Note the changes and the resulting CPU graphs.
Now create a third partition with .4 SPUs, 40% interactive and put 100% of the other systems workload in that partition. The resulting graph would be:
Now click on the Report Tab and create an LPAR tab which is used as input to the IBM LPAR Validation Tool for ordering the hardware.
Performance Navigator can do this for you.
